Street sign dedication honors first African American elected to Elkhart City Council

a Veteran and Elkhart Community leader was remembered at a street sign dedication Saturday afternoon.  At 6th and Wagner Streets the late William O. Phillips was honored.  Phillips was a veteran, the first African American elected to the Elkhart City Council, and Manager of the Elkhart Municipal Airport.

Saturday his family gathered in front of where Phillips house once stood and watched his name be unveiled atop the street sign.  His nephew, Marlon Phillips, told us his uncle was a great guy.  "He just pushed all of us to go on to secondary education and the majority of us have so he was definitely an influence as far as making yourself better and doing the best that you could do."

Family told us this is a bittersweet time.  They buried Phillips wife of 55 years on Friday.
