South Bend neighborhoods go four days without power

It's been a long week for a handful of residents in South Bend who were waiting for power.

"This week has been just terrible, Monday started it," says Joyce, who lives in Twyckenham Hills.

Her neighborhood got pretty beat up during this week's storms. "There's big old trees and every time there's a storm I worry."

Some of those trees didn't stand well this week, and Erica Putt, communications representative for I&M Power says, they were bringing down power lines with them. "We understand that when the power's out it's very frustrating so we're doing all we can to get the power restored and we won't stop working until everyone gets back on."

She said Thursday over 100 South Bend customers were still without power, 86 of those homes are in Joyce's neighborhood. And where some of the poles fell was tricky for workers. "They're not able to get the trucks up into the area to replace the pole so the guys are actually having to walk into that area which takes more time and effort on their part," says Putt.

And that also means more waiting for Joyce. "It has been quite a dreadful experience."

She says it's especially difficult because of her physical disabilities. "I have a tip-back chair. It stands me up and sits me down because of the arthritis in the hips and of course it doesn't work."

She also can't get her car in and out of her garage, lost everything in her refrigerator and can't even use an electric can opener. "My dog and I aren't doing well for food."

She says the humidity has made it a tough week to go without air-conditioning and at night she has to use lanterns and candles. "I have been totally down, totally frustrated, totally depressed because there's nothing I can do."

Nothing, but wait and she says she's anxious for power again. "I'll be so delighted, you have no idea!"

Putt says I&M expects everyone in South Bend to have their electricity back by 8pm Thursday.

She says it's storm season and they expect more power outages. If you find yourself without electricity she says to call 1-800-311-4634. "Just because your neighbor called doesn't mean we know you're out." She also says that if 24 hours have passed without power, check in on neighbors.
