Custodian who first saw Darren Price shares story

Posted:

Jennifer Grindstaff isn't usually at the Dowagiac Middle School, but Monday she filled in for a custodian and was the first in the building. "I was there at the right time, I guess and I could have probably saved a bunch of lives."

Around 6 am Monday she was putting cones out in the parking lot preparing for kids. "While I was walking out I noticed there was a guy over here in the woods. I couldn't really see him because he was pretty far away."

She later found out the person she saw was 13-year-old Darren Price. "When I got closer to the parking lot I noticed he kinda ducked behind some bushes and that just made me a little suspicious that he was kinda hiding from me."

That's when she headed inside. "As soon as I got to the building and the door, he ran to the south side of the building."

Grindstaff walked to the main hallway and saw the teen running outside past the south entry way. "I had just unlocked that side door."

Minutes later the principal arrived. Grindstaff says he looked at surveillance video, noticed the teen had a gun, then he called police. Now she has as many questions as the rest of the community. "I wonder what the reason was that he was here. I was just wondering why he didn't shoot at me."

She's grieving over Price's death, but she's grateful nobody else was hurt. "I'm very fortunate for me and the kids and the staff."

Grindstaff says she is subbing for a custodian all week. She is a little nervous about heading back to work at midnight, but she will continue to keep her eyes open.
