CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A city council member and businesswoman who previously said she would consider a run at Bruce Braley's congressional seat now says she is officially running for it.

Monica Vernon, a Cedar Rapids City Council member, announced Tuesday that she is throwing her hat into the race to represent Iowa's 1st District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

"I'm running to bring my common sense approach to problem solving in Washington," Vernon said in a press release Tuesday. "I'd like to help Congress move past the gridlock and get busy working on issues that real people deal with at their kitchen tables every day."

Vernon's bio says she spent nearly 30 years raising a family, growing a business and serving her community through volunteer work, most recently as a city council member.

Vernon, a Democrat, joins Democratic State Rep. Pat Murphy and Republicans Steve Rathje and Rod Blum in vying for the seat.

The seat is currently held by U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, who announced he will run for U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin's seat earlier this year. Harkin announced last year he would not seek another term.
