Michiana gas prices among highest in the country

Posted:

People in Michiana say they are fuming over the high gas prices because as of Wednesday night they were paying an average of $4.254 a gallon according to GasBuddy.com.

That price is more than people are paying in Honolulu according to gas experts.

Most people in Michiana were paying about $65.00 to fill up their cars today with prices as high as almost $4.299 per gallon at some gas stations.

"Ridiculous," said Elkhart Co. resident Carlos Rosendiz. "[$4.299/gallon] is a little too much man."

Rosendiz riding his motorcycle to save money at the pump, but he is not happy about it.

"I'd rather be driving my car, but putting $80 bucks a week just for gas (shakes head), no," said Rosendiz.

As of Wednesday night, the Midwest was claimed nine of the top ten highest average prices. To make matters worse, the South Bend market's prices were higher than those in California and Hawaii.

"That's ridiculous. Why have higher gas prices here than anywhere else?" said Kameron Garrett, an Elkhart Co. resident.

That is a question many people are asking themselves as the numbers continue to go up. According to GasBuddy.com experts there was a glitch in some refinery wholesale prices and they have had to buy from others which causes the rise in prices.

However, some people think it prices are high just because the oil companies know people will pay whatever it takes to get from home to work.

"They bounce it whenever they want to they don't care," said Roger Grevengoed, an Elkhart Co. resident. "[The oil companies] are doing whatever they want to do. They've got so many fail safes in place no one can figure where the prices are coming from. So they're just sticking it to us and getting away with it."

Experts say there is no telling when prices will go down.  It could be tomorrow, it could be next month, but Rosendiz just hopes to see a big drop sometime soon.

"I think everybody would like to see them at $3.00-$3.25," said Rosendiz. "Who wants to pay $4.00."

Some people say they are having to cut back in other areas too. One person said they are not able to buy their kids new toys because of what gas is costing them.
