Students celebrate the last day of school

Students in Mishawaka and at Penn Harris Madison celebrated their last day of school today. Both students and teachers at Beiger Elementary School said it was a bittersweet moment.

Kindergarten teacher Rachel Bacewic said, "It's lots of fun watching them learn and grown and then you have to hand them off to their next teacher so that's always kind of sad."

All students in Mishawaka will head back to school on August 20th.

The 570 students at Horizon Elementary have a unique way to say goodbye to the fifth-graders on their last day of elementary school.

Principal Tressa Decker described the tradition.

"We're gonna do a grand dismissal to honor our 5th graders.  And they will walk through each of our learning areas of our school and the underclassmen will cheer them on and all the way through until they exit.  And our whole school will exit together and in grand style, led out by the 5th graders. They'll board the buses and our staff will give them the annual tradition of the wave from the sidewalk as the buses pull out."

Decker said they are so proud of the amazing progress the kids made intellectually and socially this year and they are already gearing up for next year when they start August 21st.
