Kelly reportedly taps QB Tommy Rees as starter

Posted:

There may have been questions about who would be leading the Fighting Irish when they took to the football field next fall after QB Everett Golson left over academic issues, but Coach Brian Kelly has made things clear now.

MLive.com reports that Kelly announced the team's new starting quarterback during a dinner at Grand Valley State University on Wednesday.

"We always move forward," Kelly said. "I don't live in the past, and I don't spend too much time in the future. I live in the present, and in the present, we have Tommy Rees. We have Tommy Rees, who is an established player, and he will be our starter. We think Andrew Hendrix and Malik Zaire can contribute, but Tommy will be our starter."

Rees is undeniably the most experienced choice, with 18 career starts, and seeing play time in 33 games. He has had some notable issues both on and off the field.  Last year, he and another player were arrested over an altercation with police during a house party.

Kelly reportedly went on to say that the team is still "under construction," but has a good foundation, even after the lose of several notable players and recruits in the off-season.
