New minor league baseball team coming to Elkhart County

Posted:

What started out as a sand lot dream for Craig Wallin, is quickly becoming a reality. The new team owner, Craig Wallin is bringing a professional minor league baseball team to Elkhart County. The team will be called the Elkhart County Miracle.

Wallin is not only bringing a baseball team to Elkhart, but is creating a new league for Elkhart. The new Northern League, is estimated to hold about 12 teams. The Miracle are expecting to have a team of about 23 players that will include a mix of young athletes, professionals, and foreign players.

Dan Evans, Northern League Commisioner said,"We know that baseball is gonna thrive here."

Area resident are excited for the plans as well. Resident Ginnie Brandt said,"It would bring a lot of people into Elkhart, it would boost up business a lot."

Her sentiments were echoed by Bryan Schoch. "Well if opposing teams come in and they travel with em' obviously they need lodging, they gotta eat."

One exciting part of the new team, will be the brand new baseball stadium to be built. Wallin has already secured enough private funds to begin construction.  Naming rights for the stadium are still up for grabs. The location of the stadium will be announced in 2 weeks, followed by a groundbreaking ceremony on June 28, at 1:00 PM.

Wallin said, "We really wanted to find a location that all of Elkhart County could easily access. Bristol, Middlebury, Napponee, Wakarusa, Elkhart, Goshen, and this location is perfect."

The stadium will offer 625 seats, but Wallin says its design is expandable to up to 4,000.  It is also planned to include four suites.  Organizers hope to offer a family friendly and economical entertainment venue in Elkhart County.  Tickets are expected to be under $10.

This will be the second attempt to get a baseball stadium built in Elkhart County in the last 4 years.  In February of 2010, the County approved construction of a 2,500 seat stadium, but it was never built.
