Elkhart County Sheriff's Department investigating suspicious package

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department responded to a call Sunday morning that a passerby found a suspicious package on the side of County Road 26, east of County Road 21.

Police say the package was wrapped in black tape and had a fuse attached to it.

The Elkhart City Bomb Unit squad robot quickly took the homemade item to be destroyed. Neighbors nearby say the road was blocked off for a period of time while the robot removed the item.

"I couldn't understand why there would be a bomb down here on a county road. I just don't understand that, there's nothing out here, I mean it can't endanger people unless they're driving by and it happens to explode and hurt some people. I think it was just a kid's prank," says Kent Schlegelmilch.

Police couldn't immediately say whether or not the item was in fact an explosive.

The Sheriff's Department is asking anyone with information to call 574-533-4151.
