Summer heat brings health concerns

It's finally feeling like summer break. With temperatures in the lower 80's Tuesday lots of Michiana people were soaking up the sun. Between the zoo, the park, and splash pad, Potawatomi park was packed.

With the excitement to get outdoors Dr. Ken Elek says there are precautions to take. "Particularly this time of year, we've had cold weather, you know it snowed like 3 weeks ago, and so it's hard to get used to that warm weather," he says.

Dr. Elek urges people of all ages to stay hydrated and consume enough salt and electrolytes. He warns that everyone reacts differently to heat. Signs of heat related medical emergencies could be dizziness, disorientation, and not making sense. Dr. Elek says you should try to cool a person down if you observe someone under these conditions, then call 911.
