Elkhart Central looking to win first baseball state title in city history

If you ask any player on Elkhart Central about the chance to play for the school's first ever baseball championship they will all tell you the same thing.

"It's a dream come true," said Elkhart Central senior LF, Kaleb DeFreese. "We get to go out and represent Elkhart and play for a state title. It's an amazing feeling. Dream come true."

It is a dream opportunity that no baseball team in Elkhart city history has ever had in fact. However, this team says they don't care about the past, their focus is only on Saturday's game.

"[The state title] is a business trip," said Austin McArt, Elkhart Central senior 3B. "We're down [in Indianapolis] for one reason and that's to win a championship."

The Blazers will play a highly ranked Cathedral team in the championship. The Irish are not only playing for a chance at the school's third state title, they are also looking to become just the forth team in state history to go undefeated.

"It'd be crazy," said Cathedral senior Luke Cureton. "It's not something that's in the front of our mind, but if it happens, it happens. It'd be cool to make history."

The kids from Elkhart say they have no interest in watching Cathedral make history at their expense though.

"You can't let someone go undefeated in baseball," said Casey Ianigro, Elkhart Central senior 2B. "It's unheard of, so we're going to do our best to stop it."

The state championship will be the first time all season Elkhart Central will go into a game as the underdog. The Blazers have not played a team ranked higher than them all season.

As they say though, every dog has his day and Coach Steve Stutsman says his teams day will be Saturday.

"I believe with 100 percent of my whole being that we're going to win this thing," said Stutsman. "I have no doubt about it. I have all the confidence in the world."

The 4A State Championship is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Saturday at Victory Field in downtown Indianapolis.
