Hundreds of women test their skills at Notre Dame Football 101

The Irish football players are used to listening to coaches at practice, but Tuesday they got to do some of the coaching themselves as hundreds of women came to Notre Dame Football 101.

The one-night football training camp benefited the Kelly Cares Foundation and proceeds went to breast cancer research. Notre Dame Coach Brian Kelly's wife, Pacqui, is a two-time breast cancer survivor.

Several participants say the charity of the event was a big draw for them.

"My mother had breast cancer," said Jill Dewitt. "She's a breast cancer survivor and we have that in the family, so I come every year to support that."

The evening began with a cocktail hour on the field at Notre Dame stadium and then the ladies hit the practice field to go through some drills.

"I think Coach Kelly needs to see what I have to offer for the team," said Colleen Doyle. "I think I could be the next Tyler Eifert. I think I could be the next Tyler Eifert definitely."

Unfortunately for Doyle, Coach Kelly could not attend this year, but all the other coaches were there to help show the ladies some things the team does during a practice.

Participants went through tackling, conditioning, passing, and kicking drills. They also spent time in the classroom learning some of the playbook.

Tuesday's event was the forth time football 101 has been held at Notre Dame. The event has sold out all four years.

"We're thrilled, the enthusiasm is still high," said Pacqui Kelly. "There's a lot of people coming out. It's kinda a healing and a celebration for them as well."

All the participants were given green Notre Dame jerseys with pink numbers.
