Over 19,000 without power in Michiana

Following severe weather Wednesday night, over 19,000 customers are finding themselves without power.

By midnight Thursday, NIPSCO reported scattered outages throughout the viewing area. A majority of their customers experiencing outages in Lake and Porter Counties. 4,095 NIPSCO customers are currently experiencing outages.

I&M is reporting outages for its Berrien, Cass, Van Buren, and St. Joseph County customers. 6,014 customers in Berrien County, 283 in Cass County, 8,517 in Van Buren County, 147 in Allen County and 194 St. Joseph County customers are currently without power.

Erica Putt with Indiana Michigan Power says it has a meteorologist on staff so they are prepared when storms head our way.

Putt says the entire staff is on standby for Wednesday's severe weather, whether that be making repairs in the field, or answering phones in the call center.

AEP says crews are prepared to shift to service areas where there is greater damage.

The utility says to check its Facebook page and website www.indianamichiganpower.com for frequent updates.

Also, if you have an outage, report it at 1-800-311-4634.

NIPSCO is also prepared for the storms.

The company is taking the following measures to ensure preparation, including:
    Increasing staffing at customer call center.
    Scheduling extra work crews to handle any system problems.
    Postponing scheduled work that would require equipment to be out of service.
    Putting work crews out in the field to monitor the system and respond quickly to any problems.
    Remaining in contact with area public officials in the event potential problems arise.

With NIPSCO, you can report an outage a few different ways:
1.    From your smart phone or other mobile device - Search NIPSCO and your device will be automatically directed to our mobile site where you will find a button on the main page to report an outage.
2.    On your computer - Visit NIPSCO.com/OutageCenter and enter some basic information about your location.
3.    Via phone - Call 1-800-4NIPSCO (1-800-464-7726) and follow the automated prompts. You can ask to receive a call back when power has been restored.
