Some residents to be without power until Sunday evening

Posted:

Indiana Michigan Power crews continue to restore power to customers in southwest Michigan following the strong storms of Wednesday night and Thursday morning. More than 250 additional personnel are working on electric lines and providing support in the area.

Among the factors affecting the restoration is the high number of downed poles: 32. Another factor was damage to high-power transmission lines.

Here are the most-recent projections for fully restoring power in southwest Michigan communities from Indiana Michigan Power.

Benton Harbor: 8 p.m. Friday
Watervliet: 6 p.m. Saturday
Hartford North of Main Street: 6 p.m. Friday  South of Main Street: Saturday 10 p.m.
Michigan Beach: 8 p.m. Saturday
Bangor: 8 p.m. Saturday
Coloma: 8 p.m. Saturday
Riverside: 8 p.m. Saturday
Bloomingdale: 8 p.m. Friday
Lawrence: 12:00 a.m. Saturday
Gobles: 12:00 a.m. Saturday
Brandy Wine Lake and Mill Lake: 8 p.m. Saturday
Paw Paw: 8 p.m. Friday
Covert: 6 p.m. Sunday, though the majority of customers will be restored by Saturday night.

When there's this much damage Indiana Michigan Power said it just takes awhile so they're asking for peoples patience.

Coloma residents Shere and Dave Phillips went almost two days without power.  "You don't realize how much you need that or realize how much you rely on electricity for everyday use," said Shere.

Luckily for the Phillips while they waited for their electricity to be restored they could power a few things with their generator.  Shere said, "in this neighborhood with all the trees it's kinda a common occurrence most of our neighbors all have generators."  So they were ready for the power outage but they weren't ready for a tree limb to fall on their garage.  Shere said, "after we came outside and discovered this huge limb had fallen on our garage."  She said the garage looks like it's a total loss.

Luckily no one was hurt.  But the Phillips are still uneasy.  This is the third time a tree has fallen so close to their home.  "For me it's really scary every time there's a storm living here these oaks are 150 years old," said Shere.

They plan on looking into extensive tree trimming.  And the garage will have to be re-built
But at least Friday night they could enjoy one thing, electricity.  The power came on as our reporter was there!  "We're gonna probably watch some tv," said Shere.  Dave said they'll,  "turn on the air conditioning and just enjoy the electricity."
