The Blue Blazers of Elkhart Central headed off to the baseball state finals Friday morning, and the town gave them a big send-off. The team got a police escort plus cheering fans, parents, and students.
If Elkhart Central wins state, they'll be the first Elkhart city team to win in history. Central's Athletic Director, Brian Buckley, has noticed a lot of community outreach in response to the occasion.
"As the year has progressed our community, Elkhart Community Schools, have been fantastic supporting us all the way. The city has chipped in to help. You know, we got an escort today to get us out of town and it's really neat to see all of Elkhart come together to support a team that's having this much success."
Senior center fielder, Matt Eppers says confidence is the key to going far in the season.
"Just to have confidence and relax. I mean we've been in some sticky situations, I guess you could say, coming back from runs or going late in the game," says Eppers, "and just to have the confidence to be able to relax and come through."
The team and the community have high hopes for the game after the Blazers finished the regular season 31-1. Elkhart Central will be playing Cathedral High School out of Indy at Victory Field on Saturday. The game starts at 7:00 PM.
FOX28's Adam Shear will be in Indianapolis for the game. Tune in to FOX28 News at 10 on Saturday for highlights.
