Elkhart Central heads to state baseball finals

Posted:

After ending their season 31 and 1, Elkhart Central's baseball team is headed to the state finals. Fans, family, and students cheered the Blue Blazers on as they departed for Indianapolis in hopes of winning Elkhart's first ever baseball state championship.

It's been an exciting season and the team would love to win top honors in the state.

Senior center fielder Matt Eppers says the key to winning is staying calm.

"Just to have confidence and relax. I mean we've been in some sticky situations. I guess you could say coming back from runs or going late in the game and just to have the confidence to be able to relax and come through."

Athletic Director, Brian Buckley thinks much of the team's success is from improved team work over their years together. He's also proud of the community for rallying support during Central's time to shine.

"You know what, as the year has progressed our community in Elkhart Community Schools have been fantastic supporting us all the way. The city has chipped in to help. You know we got an escort today to get us out of town and it's really neat to see all of Elkhart come together to support a team that's having this much success. "

The Blazers will be taking on Cathedral high school Saturday, June 15th at Victory Field in Indy. The game starts at 7 PM.
