Teens give up weekend for service projects in Mishawaka

Posted:

In Mishawaka, middle and high school students will be spending the weekend doing community service. Bethel College is hosting a Summer of Service or SOS weekend that about 500 teenagers and volunteers will take part in.

All the participants are from local church youth groups and they'll participate in religious discussion and prayer during the weekend as well as partaking in service projects throughout the community.

Volunteer leader Chris Lehane said, "For a lot of our students, it was just an opportunity, kind of a no brainer, to get out and do something not for themselves, but for other people."

There are several community service projects planned throughout Michiana for the SOS weekend. Friday, one of the groups held a $1 car wash in Elkhart. Other groups held car washes as well, in South Bend and Mishawaka.

Volunteers and Students were also working on beautification projects in Elkhart and Mishawaka.

The SOS program started Thursday and will run through Sunday morning.
