Urban beekeeping in South Bend

Bee keeping has become a hot topic in South Bend. The Common Council is considering an ordinance that would make urban bee keeping easier.

The new proposal would allow people to have bee colonies on lots smaller than one-fourth of an acre.

To help people understand the ordinance and bees themselves, Unity Gardens has been hosting bee workshops. The group has been working with Commissioners and the public to help them understand why bees are so important.

Mitchel Yaciw, manager of Unity Gardens said bees are helpful for everyone.

"To me there's several things. One, pollination.  We're gardeners to bees increase pollination in gardens.  We have this whole global colony collapsing going on while we're losing bees and urban bees seem to do better."

The South Bend Common Council will be discussing the urban bee keeping ordinance again on June 24th.
