Elkhart offers citizens academy on police operations

Posted:

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind closed doors at your local police department?  The Elkhart Police Department is opening those doors to the public this summer.

You can be a part of the Elkhart Police Department Citizen's Academy.  Over ten weeks, residents will learn about how the department operates on a daily basis.

The weekly two and a half hour classes will cover topics like Narcotics Investigations, Special Response Teams, Defensive Tactics, Professional Standards, and Crime Scene Investigations.  Participants will be offered the chance to participate in demonstrations and ride-alongs if they want.

The academy runs Tuesdays from 6:30pm to 9:00pm.  Starting July 9 and running through September 24.  If you want to take part, you need to contact the Services Division of the Elkhart Police Department at 574-295-7070 ext. 402.  Spaces will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

Applications must be received by June 28.  You can have them mailed to you, or you can pick them up at the police station at 175 Waterfall Drive.
