Akron says farewell to beloved town marshal

Posted:

In a town of roughly 1,100 people, one death can touch a lot of lives.  "In a place like Akron, Indiana, this leaves a hole in everyone's hearts," said Pat Brasi.

That is especially true when that death is one of the two police officers for the whole town. Last week, Marshall Tim Fleck passed away due to a heart attack while on duty. He was only 49 years old. A friend said he had high blood pressure, while another friend reported that his father had more than one heart attack before his death.

Brasi is the Senior Chaplin for the Indiana Patriot Guard Riders. He and his guard led the funeral procession.  "Tim like all members of law enforcement are the people that we actually look up to," explained Brasi, "and that's why we're here today, to honor him and honor his service."

Needless to say, in the town of Akron, everybody knows everybody.  Community members say it will take time to adjust after losing a trusted member of law enforcement who served 25 years on the force. Akron residents we spoke to said they will always cherish Tim's memory.

Chad Hartzler has lived in Akron his whole life.  Hartzler says there are many things he'll miss about Tim.  "Just that friendly smile, caring attitude, and so the community is going to miss that, that smile," said Hartzler.

Carmen Wilson used to babysit Tim's kids and said he was well-liked by children and adults. "I think it's just the security of having him around. Knowing that he's always there for any of us, not only as our officer but as our friend," said Wilson.

Town Board President, Crystal Weida said that Tim was the only Marshall she had ever known, so the loss was an emotional one.  "He could sometimes be very stern, but he was a very compassionate person," Weida said.

The funeral was well attended at Akron Church of God, and bystanders waved American flags beside the curb for the procession.
