Michiana golfers hit the links at the Indiana Amateur Tournament

Nestled away in the woods of South Bend is one of the best kept secrets in Michiana this week as dozens of the best golfers in Indiana play for the Indiana Amateur Championship.

"Coming into [the Indiana Amateur Championship] you look at the field and you're playing some of the best golfers in the state," said Quentyn Carpenter, a Triton HS Graduate. "Being able to go through that experience is pretty fun."

The amateur tournament is being hosted by the South Bend Country Club. Over 150 golfers entered the tournament, but after Tuesday the field was cut to the top 60 golfers.

Among those who made the cut was Carpenter, but after Tuesday's round he was feeling rather fortunate to advance. Carpenter played great on day one shooting -1, but heads into Wednesday +8. Even after a rough day on the course he still feels optimistic.

"Great course to come up and play," said Carpenter. "It tests every club in your bag and it tested me today."

South Bend native Scott Lamb is near the top of the leader board sitting on a -2 heading into Wednesday. Lamb currently resides in Florida, but learned to play the game on the South Bend Country Club fairways.

"It's nice to have my dad come out and watch and be at my old home course. It's nice to play well here. I'm enjoying it a lot," said Scott Lamb.

Lamb is facing an uphill battle with two days left to play. Although he is currently in second place, he still sits four strokes behind Purdue's Adam Schnek, the current leader (-6). Lamb says his course familiarity is just a small portion of what it could to catch Schnek.

"Just staying patient with my game plan," said Lamb. "I'm hitting the ball well, so as long as I don't make any mental errors I should be fine."

Michiana golfers can be found all over the tournament's leader board heading into the final days. Bremen's Tracy Miller is tied for seventh (+1), Rich Butler from Michigan City is tied for 13th (+3), and Warsaw's Tyler Ostorm and Gavin Wilkinson from Elkhart are in a group tied for 18th (+4).
