Garbage truck wedged under South Shore rail bridge near Hudson L - Fox 28: South Bend, Elkhart IN News, Weather, Sports

UPDATE: Crews expect bridge to be repaired by Saturday at earliest

Posted: Updated:

Shore service has been shut down between South Bend and Michigan City today after an accident in LaPorte County. The truck was removed from under the bridge around 5:30pm Eastern / 4:30pm Central.

Crews said that the bridge's repair will take time and the earliest date it would be operational again would be Saturday. Their goal is to have the bridge operational by the beginning of next week.

A garbage truck hit a South Shore railway bridge just west of the Hudson Lake Station around 9:00am Eastern / 8:00am Central this morning. Daniel Allen who lives next door to the bridge said he was shocked to see the damage from the crash.

"People have been going through this intersection for years and nobody's ever hit it like that," said Allen.

NICTD Police say the bridge moved an estimated 6 feet. The driver, who only suffered minor injures to his face, immediately called 911. Dispatchers contacted the railway, which stopped a westbound train that left South Bend Regional Airport around 8:50am Eastern / 7:50am Central Time. Passengers on that train were taken back to South Bend for busing to Michigan City.

South Shore is busing passengers between S. Bend, Hudson Lake and Michigan City until further notice. South Shore recommends passengers drive to Carroll Ave. in Michigan City to board trains. The following trains have been canceled until further notice: westbound Trains 422, 424 and 710.

Tanika Childress says she rides the train about once a week from South Bend to Chicago, and is not to thrilled about the extra time she think it will take on the bus.

"You know I got to be back out here at a certain time to be at work and everything," said Childress. "This things just crazy. It's all about the time. "

All passengers should expect delays while the closure remains in effect. Some passengers say they are okay with using the bus in the meantime though because its better than nothing.

"I'm glad they do have something in place so it's not just. Sorry folks it's closed, you're going to have to wait here for two days," said Jeff Botelho, who was traveling from South Bend to Chicago.
