Traffic Alert: Part of Main Street in Mishawaka closing Monday

Posted:

A major traffic headache starts Monday in Mishawaka and is expected through July.

The city of Mishawaka says northbound Main Street between Douglas Road and University Drive will close starting Monday at 7:00am for 3 weeks.

After the work on northbound Main Street is done, southbound Main Street will be closed until the end of July.

Crews will be working on the storm sewers in the area and repaving.

The city of Mishawaka says local traffic will be maintained between Douglas Road and Indian Ridge Boulevard for access to businesses.

The official detour will take traffic east on Douglas and University to Fir Road. The city warns drivers should expect long delays.

The road closure has businesses in the area pretty worried.  Owner of Comfort Inn and Suites, Aslam Chaudhry said, "we are getting business from the Toll Road.  If they block that side how do we get the business?"  He said this is the worst time of the year for a road closure in front of his hotel.  "We will be hurting badly...this is the part of the year we make money, if they close the road we'll be stuck."

June, July, and August are the hotels busiest months.  So obviously Chaudhry would have preferred to see the construction finished earlier in the year.   Just down the road at Mancino's they agree.  Employee James Ready said, "It's definitely gonna hurt everything.  This time of year is our best, it's our prime, most businesses are, everyone's out, everyone's enjoying the weather, getting food to take to go."

Patrons feel for the businesses too.  Talina Grierson said, "it's horrible for these businesses it's a loss for these businesses."  She knows what it's like, being the manager of the Dairy Queen in Granger, "we're a busy family place so the construction does hurt our business a little bit."

But she also routinely drives on Main street.  "Every Friday we come here to grab our movies and um do our grocery shopping." said Grierson.  So she knows she's in for a driving challenge these next few weeks.  "It's gonna be hard cause now we're gonna have to figure out some way around."
