Purdue aviation program helps dreams take flight

A Purdue University program is opening new career horizons for people with physical disabilities or injuries.

Able Flight is a not-for-profit organization that trains participants to use adapted aircraft and earn their sports pilot's certificate. It is based at the West Lafayette campus.

Trainees use their hands to control the rudder and brake traditionally operated by a pilot's feet.

The program has brought freedom to Lt. Andrew Kinard. The Iraq war veteran lost his legs to an improvised explosive device but says flying provides "unfiltered freedom."

Able Flight participants come from around the country. The five participants will have their certificates by the end of June.
