Berrien Co Health Department to offer free HIV testing

Posted:
The following is from a press release from the Berrien County Health Department:

Berrien County, MI – In observance of National HIV Testing Day, on June 27th, 2013 the Berrien County Health Department will offer free and confidential HIV testing to Berrien County residents. National HIV Testing Day is an opportunity for people of all ages to learn their HIV status and gain knowledge to help them take control of their health and their lives.

Too many people don't know they have HIV. In the United States, nearly 1.2 million people are living with HIV, and almost one in five don't know they are infected. Getting tested is the first step to finding out if you have HIV. If you have HIV, getting medical care and taking medicines regularly helps you live a longer, healthier life and also lowers the chances of passing HIV on to others.

"Everyone should know their HIV status so that you can protect yourself and others," says Peggy Hamel, the Berrien County Health Department Clinical and Community Health Services Manager. "Today, with early treatment and care, you can live a longer and healthier life."

On Thursday, June 27th from 8:30am-5:00pm, the Berrien County Health Department will offer free HIV tests at their location on 756 Pipestone in Benton Harbor. The hassle-free HIV test takes only 15 minutes to complete, and tests are completely confidential and/or anonymous. No appointments are necessary for this HIV testing event; all Berrien County residents are encouraged to stop by to get tested.

The Berrien County Health Department offers confidential and/or anonymous HIV and STD testing by appointment at the Benton Harbor and Niles locations. HIV and STD testing are available to anyone and no one will be turned away for inability to pay. Regular clinic times and location information is available at the Berrien County Health Department website here..
