Family reunited with pet dog after a year and a half

A family and their dog are back together after more than a year and a half apart.  The Elkhart County Humane Society was able to reunite them Wednesday.  The Humane Society said the happy occasion is all thanks to the dog being microchipped.

The dog named Emma was found living in an abandoned home.  She came to the Humane Society Monday but since she was microchipped they were able to call her owners and have them pick her up Wednesday.  "Those microchips for shelters are just an incredible life saver because we can make that match more quickly and get the animal and the owner reunited," said Anne Reel, the Executive Director of the Elkhart Humane Society.

Reel said thanks to microchips they have been able to reunite pets with their owners who have been missing for even longer than Emma was, so they encourage everyone to microchip their pets.

And Emma's family told us Wednesday night they are in shock but so happy to have their dog back.  We'll have much more with the family Thursday here on FOX28 news and
