South Bend nonprofit encourages people to get HIV test

Thursday was National HIV and AIDS Testing Day. In the US nearly 1.2 million people are living with HIV and 21% of those people don't even know they are infected.

It's recommended that every one between the ages of eighteen to sixty-four gets tested. At AIDS Ministries in South Bend, a quick mouth swab test takes only 20 minutes.

Latorya Greene, the Prevention Managed at AIDS Ministries said, "HIV affects every last one of us. It's non discriminatory, it doesn't care who you are. So it's really important that we get tested and find out what our status is."

According to in St. Joseph County at the end of 2010, 197 out of every 100,000 people were living with an HIV infection diagnosis.

Although Thursday is the National HIV testing day, AIDS ministries offers free testing Monday through Thursday from 11 am to 3 pm. No appointment is needed and you can find more information on our website, FOX 28 dot com.
