"Project Restoration" looks to revitalize abandoned homes

Posted:

The South Bend Common Council and the mayor's office have been sorting out how to deal with all the abandoned homes in the city. Thursday a special committee met to go over ideas.

The initiative is called "Project Restoration." The group wants to address 1,000 abandoned homes, but they don't want to tear them all down.

The committee is studying revitalization success stories from different cities like the Fall Creek Development in Indianapolis

Chris Fielding of Department of Community Investments said, "I think there's an opportunity to make a difference in the community, not just through demolition but also through the possibility of doing de-construction and plotting out what we do with the land after it's cleared."

Councilman Henry Davis, Jr. said, "Some of the homes will have to go, but we actually have to have a plan in place when a home is being demolished or being slated for demolition."

"Project Restoration" is also looking at possible grant opportunities to help in revitalization efforts.
