Groundbreaking held for new Elkhart County Baseball Field

Posted:

The Elkhart County Miracle Baseball team held a groundbreaking at their new facility Friday.  The team is setting up shop at the old American Countryside Farmers Market off County Road 26 in Elkhart.

Friday a golden shovel dug up the first dirt in the process of building a baseball field at the location.  The shovel struck dirt about where home plate will be located.  The new field will be behind the old Farmers Market building.

Owner of the team, Craig Wallin, said he expects construction on the new baseball diamond to start in July.  He hopes to have sod or turf down by September.  The Elkhart County Miracle will start their first season in May of 2014.  Wallin said the team will start on the road so their first home game will probably be in June of 2014.

Wallin said the first step in getting a baseball team together will be getting a team manager.  He hopes to have one in place by the fall.

The old Farmers Market building will be staying put.  Wallin said the west wing of the building will be used for team clubhouses, umpire offices, training facilities, and more.

Craig Wallin said, "This is a beautiful property, in a great location, easily accessible off the bypass and so we just feel that we've got something special here."

Local vendors will also be able to come and sell their products in the building.  Mattern's Meats and Deli will be providing the ballpark food.

The American Countryside Farmers Market building will still be used for non baseball activities.  Wallin said it has been used for several types of events including weddings and that will continue even once the team moves in.

Wallin said they have also been talking to a company that makes ferris wheels and carousels so they may be building a carousel at the ballpark.  He said they want to have activities for the whole family.
