A fire broke out at a shredder facility in New Carlisle Saturday morning.

New Carlisle Fire Chief Josh Schweizer said a security guard reported a small fire in the pile around 4:45am. The guard put the fire out with an extinguisher, but it rekindled around 6:15am.

Schweizer said the metal recycling company recycles vehicles and once all of the scrap metal has been separated, the rest goes into a pile. That pile, at about a hundred feet by fifty feet, was what caught fire.

Schweizer said not knowing exactly what materials are in the pile, firefighters take all the proper precautions to make sure everyone is safe. It took firefighters a little more than two hours to get the highly combustible material under control.

At this time, Schweizer believes the ignition was accidental.
