Fewer people traveling for 4th of July holiday

Posted:

Hitting the road for the 4th of July?

You'll actually have a little less company than last year.

AAA expects a slight decrease in the number of travelers because the holiday falls on a Thursday this year.

That gives people a few less options to take a longer trip.

"Last year it fell on a Wednesday and that gave people really the entire week and both long weekends to travel and it's historically the time when we see the most people traveling for a 4th of July weekend," says Beth Mosher with AAA.

A recent AAA survey shows 41 million people will be traveling more than 50 miles.

Gas prices have dropped a bit since the survey was taken, so the number of travelers could go up.

According to Gas Buddy, you'll pay around $3.47 a gallon right now in the South Bend area.

Keep your eye out, you might have to dig just a little deeper in your pocket as the holiday approaches.

"We are seeing some stations raise their prices across the state, so my concern is that we may see a little bit of a price increase here as we approach July 4, but by in large prices are much lower than they were a month ago, of course on the flip side prices are a little higher than last year," says Patrick DeHaan with Gas Buddy.

A year ago we were paying about $3.35 per gallon.

Michigan is at $3.50 right now.

Illinois has an average price of $3.74.
