90th family reunion

This year, the Laidig family is celebrating their 90th family reunion in Bremen, Indiana.           And, every previous reunion has always been held on or near the Fourth of July.

The Laidig gathering dates back to the 1920s when John and Mary Laidig were raising their 12 kids on a farm near Bremen and started throwing an annual family picnic. As those 12 kids married and had children of their own, the family continued to grow but came back together every Fourth of July to celebrate our nation's independence.

The family has gathered every year through the Great Depression, World War II, and all of the ups and downs of the last 90 years. This year, just like in years past, hundreds of Laidigs will come from across the United States to gather just like their ancestors did. They will pray together, share stories of marriages, births and deaths from the past year, enjoy a potluck meal and good old fashioned fun.

While the kids play games outside, the adults will learn some family history. This year's focus is on marriage and younger family members will learn how the 12 original children of John and Mary met their spouses, along with some more current love stories.

Aldean Laidig Feldman, age 97, and the only surviving child of John and Mary Laidig, also shares her personal love story.

John Laidig, the founding father of the reunion, taught his children to have a strong faith in God, patriotism for our country and focus on the family. These values are passed on from generation to generation.
