UPDATE: Pilot identified in Nappanee crash

Posted:

Crew are continuing to investigate a single-engine plane crash that happened early Friday afternoon near Nappanee.  The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department says the 63-year-old pilot had just left the Elkhart airport, heading to Indianapolis, when the trouble started.

John Seaver of Elkhart contacted the air traffic control tower in South Bend, which advised he head to the Goshen or Nappanee airport.  Seaver did not believe he could make it, so decided to try an emergency landing in an open field off of CR-9 and CR-44.  During the landing, his landing gear gave out.

The pilot was not injured in the crash.  The plane was leaking some fuel, but crews contained the leak.  Authorities say the pilot has over 40 years experience as a pilot.
