Villopotto, Roczen big winners as RedBud celebrates 40 years

Who would have thought 40 years ago that the RedBud Motocross Track in Buchanan would become one of the most popular fan destinations in the country.

The track manager said when RedBud first started having pro racers there were only a couple thousand people in attendance.

Saturday's Red Bull RedBud National race was much different. Over 20,000 fans crowded the track to see some of the best motocross drivers in the country.

The overall winner of the Red Bull RedBud Moto 250 was Ken Roczen, who was in all the way from Germany. Roczen finished second in Moto 1, but got the win in Moto 2 to take home the trophy.

"The track is super soft, I really liked it," said Roczen. "We got a lot of rain before this weekend, that made it even deeper.  Very tricky, but I'm glad to pull it off, 2 and 1, and the overall win.  What's good for me, now we have a weekend off.  Go into the week, it's going to be way more relaxed and stuff, so I'm happy with how I did."

There was no contest in the 450 class as Ryan Villopoto took both checkered flags. Villopoto was viewed by many coming into the weekend as the favorite for this class, and he delivered.

"Redbud is always an awesome place to race," said Villopotto. "I didn't get to race last year, but the track is a lot different from then.  I think the track is better now.  But, yeah, it's always fun to come here and race on 4th of July weekend.  The crowd is one thing here, they really get into it, so it's fun to race in front of those guys."

Westville, IN native Travis Sewell placed 40th in the 450MX race.
