UPDATE: Medical condition may have caused deadly South Bend crash

Posted:

South Bend Police are investigating a deadly traffic crash that happened at Sample and Olive Streets Sunday night.

Police tell us 53-year-old Michael Strantz was heading eastbound on Sample Street when he crashed through siderailing, down the embankment and crashed onto the tracks below.

Saint Joseph County coroner Nancy Pemberton says the autopsy is complete and confirmed Strantz was killed by blunt force trauma. At this point she says they do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved. She says family members say Strantz had not been feeling well for a couple days prior to the accident which leads her to think a medical condition caused him to go off the road.

On Sunday, Sergeant Bill Kraus says it was a train conductor who saw something on the tracks ahead and called police.

The train was able to stop in time.

Police wouldn't say whether the driver died at the scene or at the hospital.

At this time investigators don't know what caused the driver to go off the overpass.

"This is a very hard area to access in the first place so it's not very easy to get to it plus we are down here and it was confusing to the officers because there's an access point on the other side of the tracks too so officers were coming from both directions not sure where to go and this makes it extremely difficult down here. Plus the trains, we're backing up now a nation of trains," says Sergeant Kraus.

Train traffic is also backed up in the area.

Officials are making sure the tracks weren't damaged during the crash.
