Giving blood to honor fallen officers

Some blood donors took an hour to save a life in Warsaw Tuesday.

They were taking part in the statewide Fallen Officer Blood Drive campaign at Center Lake Pavilion.

The campaign was created by Janice Starnes to remember her husband Sergeant Daniel Starnes.

Starnes was killed in the line of duty in 2001.

In addition to honoring officers, this event helps raise awareness for blood donations.

"My son fortunately is not a fallen officer but he is an officer. So I've got a soft spot for officers," said donor Ervin Bolt.

"We are always out searching and trying to collect as much blood as we can," said American Red Cross Team Supervisor Julie Haire. "Right now during the summer months our blood supply is at a shortage. We're always calling out for new blood donors and blood and blood and platelet donors."

The drive was pretty successful since they collected over 70 units.
