Memorial Hospital debuts 2 new hybrid ORs

Memorial Hospital in South Bend is celebrating Tuesday!

They just opened 2 brand new hybrid operating suites.

This suites will allow doctors to integrate traditional surgery with minimally invasive surgical techniques. Basically patients will be able to stay in one room for all procedures.

The project took about 18 months to plan and a year to put together. Equipment to put in the operating rooms cost about $7.5 million.

"It's been a lot of hard work, a lot of support from the community, a lot of support from our physicians," Jayne Mitton, the executive director of surgical and trauma services at Memorial hospital says, "And we're very proud of it."

Mitton says that now Memorial doctors will be able to perform more advanced procedures-- keeping patients in South Bend instead of sending them to Fort Wayne or Chicago.

"We are probably as far ahead as anybody in the community with all this, we're pretty excited. It's very unusual to have this type of technology in a community hospital."

The first case will take place in the operating rooms on July 29th.
