Kayaker rescued from Tippecanoe River after boat tips over

Emergency responders pulled a kayaker from the Tippecanoe River Tuesday.  The DNR says 65-year-old Walt Krzyzak and his wife were kayaking on the river near Winamac when Krzyzak hit something under the water and his kayak flipped over.

Krzyzak managed to grab hold of "a snag" nearby and held on until help arrived.  Other visitors called in Tippecanoe River State Park personnel to rescue Krzyzak.

Officers say the man had a lifejacket in the kayak, but it wasn't accessible.  Indiana Conservation Officer Jeff Richwine, who was part of the rescue, says is Krzyzak was wearing the lifejacket, it could have prevented the need for a rescue.
