Local teens put on production of Aida

Posted:

The brightest stars in South Bend School's theatres have come together to present Aida this weekend. All of the students participating are among the top in their schools' drama departments.

Aida is a modern musical version of the original opera with music by Elton John. It is this year's Summerfly Musical for area student actors, singers and dancers.

Kids, Grades 6 to 12, try-out every year. The director said they end up with young talent that they look forward to working with all year.

Candace Butler, Director said, "And I think the kids are excited because we are able to do some productions that are maybe a little more involved, a little more difficult than the typical high school can."

Addyson Culpepper who is playing Aida said, "I am Aida and my character is a Nubian princess who gets captured by the Egyptians and I'm trying to keep that a secret.  I don't want anybody to know that, that I'm a princess, because I'll be killed.  So this whole time it's a pull, do I help my people or do I fall in love?"

The show opens Thursday night at Clay High School Auditorium and runs through Saturday. Tickets cost $10 in advance and $12 at the door.
