Elkhart city council meets to discuss sewer dispute

In Elkhart the city council met to discuss the ongoing sewer dispute Wednesday evening. Council members had two proposals to consider.

The first was from Mayor Dick Moore calling for county users of the city's sewer system to pay thirty-five percent of the assessed value of their properties. The other ordinance, from the council, is a flat fifteen percent extra than what city residents pay.

An amendment to one of the proposals was introduced tonight.

The discussion turned heated between one council member and the mayor.

Councilman David Henke said, "We don't recognize the very business, transit, sales tax, employment tax that keeps us within the confines of the people we have."

This drew a response from Mayor Dick Moore who said, "I'm not going to stand here and accept your criticism. If you realize that the mayor knew up front that seventy-five percent was an unfair figure then went to fifty and then a mayor got the recommendation that he would make it work with thirty-five percent, you're entitled to your own opinion."

Both proposals include a plan for annexation where possible. Neither ordinance or amendment could be agreed upon and the issue was tabled. It will be brought up once again at a working meeting.
