Fire at South Bend factory blamed on static electricity

Fire investigators say a fire at a South Bend factory that sent two people to the hospital Thursday was caused by static electricity.

The South Bend Fire Department was called to Royal Adhesives and Sealants in the 2000 block of West Washington Street around 1:20 p.m. When firefighters arrived, they found flames in a production area. Firefighters say they were able to put out the flames quickly.

Fire officials say two people were taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor smoke inhalation and burns.

Investigators say the fire happened after flammable vapors were ignited by static electricity while some liquids were being transferred.

Damage due to the fire is estimated at $5000.
