Niles Salvation Army puts together backpacks for kids in need

Posted:

For the past 8 years, the Niles Salvation Army has helped kids get ready for back to school.

The organization uses money they raise during Christmas-time to put together backpacks full of school supplies for kids in need.

Last year, 160 backpacks were given out. Organizers are hoping to give out at least 200 backpacks full of supplies this year.

The Niles Salvation Army started taking applications for the backpacks at the beginning of this week, and will continue to do so for the next two weeks.

Major Tracey Walters of the Niles Salvation Army says, "That's what we try to do, make sure that everybody's needs are being met as much as possible and to make sure that they can enjoy school."

If you're interested in donating school supplies, you can call the Niles Salvation Army office at 269-684-2660 for donation locations.

If you're interested in applying for a backpack full of supplies for your child, bring your picture ID, yours and your child's Social Security cards, and proof that your child is in school (a report card, etc). The Niles Salvation Army is located at 424 North 15th Street and their hours are from 9 to 4.
