Aggressive weeds could endanger Michiana

Elkhart County Farmers are on the lookout for an aggressive weed that's spreading across other parts of Indiana.

It's called the Palmer Amaranth.

It can grow up to seven feet tall and take over crops.

It spreads quickly because it can produce anywhere from 100 to 500 thousand seeds per plant.

"Its very similar to the pig weed we have in Elkhart County but it is a weed that hasn't developed the ability to adapt very quickly to herbicides of various types," says agriculture educator with Purdue Extension, Jeff Burbrink.

Experts say people need to rotate herbicides so the weeds will not become herbicide resistant.
