Fulton County firefighters battled a very dangerous blaze late Wednesday night in Rochester, after a fireworks stand caught fire.

It happened at 9:44 on the 1400 block of 18th Street at Windy City Fireworks. Fulton County Sheriff Walker Conley tells FOX28 the first unit on the scene was just two minutes away when the fire got called in, but by the time that unit arrived the place was fully engulfed in flames.

Windy City Fireworks is made up of two connected buildings, totaling 16,000 square feet. Inside the building were not only fireworks, but antiques and "flea market items."

Conley says every department within Fulton County was called out to the blaze, with Argos and Mentone Fire Departments on standby to assist any other fires that might break out in the area.

"There were fireworks exploding, going up in the air.  There were loud explosions that carried on for approximately an hour while I was here, and then they started getting under control.  The place was completely engulfed," said Sheriff Conley.

It took crews hours to douse the fire and put out the hot spots, but Conley says there was no one inside the building when the fire broke out and no injuries are being reported.

"The fire was dangerous for the firefighters," Conley said. "When I got there I saw roman candle type fireworks exploding heading toward the firemen. It was up at the bucket truck and U.S. 31 is just a ways up from this intersection."

Fire Chief Tom Butler said it was too dangerous to go inside the building to fight the fire. Water supply was also a problem.  The chief said they were forced to draft water from a nearby pond.

At one point we're told between 25 and 30 cars were stopped near the corner of U.S. 31 and State Road 14. Conley says there should not be any traffic problems for drivers near there Thursday morning.

Investigators are still working to determine a cause for the fire.  The Fulton County sheriff told FOX28 that security would remain on the site into Friday.
