Volunteers painting mural on SR-933 in South Bend

Volunteers are sharing an artistic endeavor with the community in South Bend.  They are painting a mural on the wall of an overpass of SR-933.

After less than five days of work, nearly the whole east wall is covered in art.  Volunteers say they are hoping to get under the bridge by tomorrow.

The project to beautify the City of South Bend is headed by the Community Foundation. This mural is just one of many to come. Some feedback from the community has been extremely positive, but some people have had some concerns about the cost.

Nick Easely, the Project Consultant from the Community Foundation helping with the mural set-up, says that isn't an issue.  "The good news is that you don't have to worry about that because it's not taxpayer funding."

Groups like Memorial Hospital, Outpost Sports, The Home Depot, Behr Paint, YMCA, The Center for the Homeless, and others have donated either their time, money, or supplies to help the project.

Easely hopes that the project will connect people in South Bend in a common goal.   "Why can't we do something together," he said.

The design depicts a 3D image of a stone bridge over a bright blue waterway. The lead designer of the mural, Chris Stacowicz, explained his idea behind the picture.  "Just taking some of the highlights that you would see downtown making it into an aesthetically pleasing combination almost like hip-hop, you know? Like visual hip-hop of the different spaces and combining it," he said.
As Chris moves forward to paint the overpass he plans to paint a "Welcome to South Bend" logo as a gateway to the city. He hopes this creates a better atmosphere for entering the city.

"Instead of thinking of it as 'we want to enter in [the city] and we only see this?' Instead we're going to enter in and see something beautiful that will condition us a little bit."

They had about 30 people helping out on Friday, despite the heat. Sometimes they only have about four or five. While some volunteers are already talented artists, Chris says everyone should be able to help.

"I'm a firm believer that anyone who wants to volunteer can actually do it, and if you're really serious about becoming a painter through the process of painting, this we can train you to be an excellent painter."

The painting is expected to go on through September.
