Tips for exercising in the heat

While most people have been staying inside during the week's heat wave, many fitness fanatics are still outside exercising.

Dr. Mark Lavallee, the Director of Sports Medicine for Beacon Health System said staying hydrated is essential for a work-out, but not just during the work-out.

"Hydration starts not when you're thirsty and not after you started running or exercising or biking or doing things outside it should start the night before if you're going to be racing or just throughout the day," said Dr. Lavallee.

While hydration is key, so is the time of day. Try to exercise in the morning or evening.

Dr. Lavallee said if you decide to exercise outside in the heat, make sure a friend knows your route and when you leave, in case you come down with a heat illness.
