UPDATE: Pilot identified in LaPorte County plane crash

The LaPorte County Sheriff's Office says the pilot of an ultralight plane was killed when he crashed early Sunday morning.

The Sheriff's Office says another pilot told deputies that he and 36-year-old Benjamin Hubbard of South Bend had both departed the Niles airport around 6:30am in route to Plymouth where they were going to meet.

When Hubbard never arrived, he retraced his steps and found the wreckage in a cornfield east of County Road 600 East, South of Division Road.

The pilot called 9-1-1 and circled until emergency crews arrived.

Hubbard was pronounced dead at the scene.

The F-A-A is investigating.
