Dandekar officially running for 1st Congressional seat

Democrat Swati Dandekar announced Tuesday that she is officially a candidate for the 1st Congressional seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley.

Dandekar joins a long list of people who want to fill the seat when Braley leaves the UU.S.House to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Tom Harkin. 

"Over the past few months, I have been exploring a run for the 1st Congressional District," Dandekar said in a written statement. "I have met with voters across the district and have been encouraged by their support for my campaign."

Dandekar represented the Marion area in the Iowa House of Representatives from 2003 to 2009 and the Iowa Senate from 2009 to 2011.

She then served on the Iowa Utilities Board from 2011 until Monday. 

On the Democratic side, Dandekar joins State Rep. Pat Murphy, Cedar Rapids Councilwoman Monica Vernon and Cedar Rapids attorney Dave O'Brien as candidates for the seat.

State Rep. Anesa Kajtazovic, a Democrat, is still exploring the possibility of running for the seat.

On the Republican side, Cedar Rapids businessman Steve Rathje, Dubuque businessman Rod Blum have announced their candidacy.

State Rep. Kraig Paulsen, a Republican, is exploring the possibility of running for the seat.
