4H kids prepare to wrap up fair week

Posted:

It's not all fun and games at the fair. Hundreds of 4-H kids spent the week grooming their animals, getting them ready to compete, and ultimately sell.

It's Gavin Erb's third year showing pigs and earlier this week he brought home a championship. "It takes a lot of time, but in the end it's worth it."

His mom, Megan Erb was a 10-year 4H member. "We really enjoy it as a family."

But she says it's not all about the fun, she wants her kids to learn valuable lessons through their involvement. "It's a lot of time management, a lot of responsibility and they learn it at a pretty young age so it carries on as they grow up and become adults."

Brady Schultz agrees that there's more to it than having a good time. "It is really hard and it really does stink sometimes."

But he says he keeps coming back, this is his fourth year showing pigs. "I like 4H because you just get to get in with the animals, you get to learn more about them, you get to just have fun with it too."

His dad, Brett Schultz says it's about more than just the week at the fair. His sons have been working hard with their pigs for months. Even training them to sit! "I think it's great for them to learn how to take care of animals, responsibility, good hard work, good habits," says Brett.

All agree though, no matter how fun the week of fair is, the end is always tough. "It's really going to be hard to say goodbye to them with so much that we've taught them and worked with them, it's going to be pretty hard," says Brady.

Friday wraps up a busy week for 4-H members, with the big auction. "That's probably the hardest part. We name our pigs, but we know we have to let them go at the end, so we say goodbye," says Brett.

Friday's auction starts at 9 am and runs all day.
