New plaza to expand South Bend's downtown amenities

Downtown South Bend is putting a new plaza on Jefferson street, across from the Key Bank. It will be called the Studebaker Plaza, because it's on the site where the old Studebaker blacksmith shop used to be.

The city hopes to include some traditional Studebaker designs to honor the company's history. The future plaza will be a new gathering area for many of downtown's favorite events like Art Beat and lunchtime concerts.

The area will be connected to a patio for a new bar called "The Exchange".

Jitin Kain, the Director of City Planning, is trying to accommodate the growing market.

"As we see more and more people wanting to live downtown, people working downtown, we need to create amenities for them," said Kain.

Studebaker Plaza should be finished by early November. There are plans to eventually paint a mural at the plaza as well.
